I am the founder and Executive Director of TILE, a nonprofit which operates free and accessible monthly lecture circuits for students interested in innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Our events feature notable local business leaders and serve as valuable educational resources for attendees, who draw from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. For many, this is their first career-related event. TILE has 30 locations in nine countries, and is currently adding one new location a week.

Portland, OR — AXA Advisors, LLC announced the following students and their high school will each receive $2,500 as winners of the 2017 AXA Achievementsm Community Award:

Britteny Eng, Tigard, Tigard High School

During my junior year in high school, I became the coach of my high school's first Special Olympics Unified soccer team. This was our first sports team made of individuals with and without disabilities. I led thirty students from special ed and general ed to work together on and off the field and compete against other Unified soccer teams. Through my team, I helped the school see the misconceptions of those with special needs and to rally behind the success and abilities of its students.

Jared Murlat, Tigard, Tigard High School

In September of 2015 I completed my Eagle Scout Project. After over a year of searching, planning, fund raising, and building, the process was complete. The project provided a custom composting system, a tool rack, and four garden beds for a local community garden. These improvements will help the garden feed the needy in the local community.

There are countless homeless people in the city of Portland, along with the rest of the nation, that don't own any socks. These people face the prospect of developing frostbite, dangerous infections, and skin irritations. In addition, they suffer from social embarrassment without this basic necessity, which is the least-donated article of clothing to shelters. I facilitated a school-wide sock drive, raising a total of 1600 pairs of socks, over a span of two years, to benefit the homeless.

The AXA Achievement Community Award helps families take small, manageable steps toward higher education and educators and their schools take small, manageable steps toward future success. Every AXA Advisors office nationwide distributes awards to graduating high school seniors and schools in their local area.

“The Portland branch has a long history of community involvement.  We’re proud to provide information and support to help students and parents take the next step to college and to honor their educators and schools as essential to their success,” commented Amy Schlager, West Region Executive Vice President.  “AXA Advisors is about investments and we consider these scholarships an investment in these students and in our community.”

The AXA Achievement Community Award is one of AXA’s scholarships in the larger AXA Achievement program. Through AXA Achievement, AXA is one of the nation’s largest corporate providers of scholarships — awarding more than $1.4 million a year — and a comprehensive resource for information to help families plan for college. Winners — known as AXA Achievers — are graduating high school seniors who demonstrate ambition, determination to set and reach goals, and the ability to succeed in college.

The program is administered by Scholarship Management Services®, a program of Scholarship America®, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit private sector and educational support organizations.

Funded by the AXA Foundation, the director of AXA’s philanthropic and volunteer activities, AXA Achievement was established to address the financial barriers faced by college-bound high school students. Another component of the AXA Foundation’s scholarship program is the highly successful AXA Achievementsm Scholarship, which awards $670,000 in scholarships annually. Since the program began in 2003, AXA Achievement has awarded over $25 million in college scholarships to more than 6,000 students.
